Should be working [Jan. 26th, 2009|06:21 pm]
but it kind of pointless right now - food called and now I am totally off track (Boloco Tofu Burritos rock the world)

This past weekend was amazing -will update with more details and pictures later-
Hiking 9 miles with some serious elevation changes with snowshoes and temps below zero is pretty serious work, but the solas and tranquility were exactly what I needed, not to mention the cool new people I was able to hang with.

But it put things in prescriptive:
The person I am dating is just down right amazing and my protective stances on things are just stupid (I am kind of bummed that I will not get to see her until Friday but it will be a really good day, and I will hopefully be able to knock out my writing)

I need to take more time for self-care

and what I am super-excitied about for friday:

Thats right I am going to see mother-efin Andrew Bird!!!!!

alright off to yoga

Today just doesn't seem to be working [Dec. 22nd, 2008|01:49 pm]
I have had a headache going on about 3 days now - I think it might be the weather - lots of changes and lots and lots of snow (work got called off on Friday so it was a nice 3 day weekend), glad we are past the winter solstice - this getting dark at 4pm thing is kind of silly (and starting to really get to me, I just can't focus on anything right now)

Tomorrow night I hope on a plane back to SoFL for a few days, yea warm weather (maybe 80's), lots of sunshine, and the ole' school trio being back together again.

Hum... Not to sure how I feel about this [Dec. 2nd, 2008|10:37 am]
One [party] to rule them all, not to say that I would be horribly sad to see Saxby go but still.....
Are you Serious, Georgia! is a close race for the Senate... WTF

I am totally unsure about this if Saxby loses it would be a complete changing of the guard (by old-school GOP), and needed legislation would go through without any problems - but I am worried about have no really checks/different ideas

But seriously Republicans, you need to come up with something better then Sarah Palin, really.....
New Democratic party has Obama, Warner, Kaine, moderates that are smart, thoughtful and politically savvy: Palin is not what you want up against them, really....

What??????????? [Nov. 20th, 2008|11:45 am]
So maybe we will start to see some forward movement on environmental policies!

"Representative Henry A. Waxman of California ousted Representative John D. Dingell of Michigan from his post as chairman of the influential Committee on Energy and Commerce on Thursday, giving President-elect Barack Obama an advantage in his plans to promote efforts to combat global warming."

Story at the NY Times

Change = Yes!
Go kick some butt Rahm, I am really interested to see much of a clean, well tuned, machine that Obama Admin. turns out to be (at least I can Hope :)

So... this is part of the solution to fixing the U.S. Economy????? [Sep. 22nd, 2008|02:41 pm]
Really????
John McCain you really are buggin the f@ck out
Invest billions today to make a little dent for a few years tomorrow
--common sense, please?!?, let find something that is a real fix
Offshore Drilling
According to the US Energy Information Administration, oil production from drilling offshore in the outer continental shelf wouldn't begin until around the year 2017. Once begun, it wouldn't reach peak production until about 2030 when it would produce only 200,000 barrels of oil per day (in yellow above). This would supply a meager 1.2% of total US annual oil consumption (just 0.6% of total US energy consumption). And, the offshore oil would be sold back to the US at the international rate, which today is $106 a barrel. So, the oil produced by offshore drilling would not only be a "drop in the bucket", it would be expensive, which translates to "no relief at the pump"

Please, no more planes and can I have a job offer too? [Sep. 21st, 2008|08:13 pm]
----my ability to not complete anything today, and to not sleep is almost non-human this weekend---

I have been a lump, just wasting time away (hopefully tomorrow will be a new day, with accomplishment, and a job offer -maybe-)

To Do Tomorrow:
- Send out writing samples to Boston MPO
- Prep for phone interview with Cambridge Systematics at 2pm
- Paper reading/revising
- Work on Emergency response ideas
- Send out resumes: Palm Beach Gardens, FL Dept. of Comm. Affairs, Travis Co. TX (GIS Coord, and Planner), Metro Chicago, Metro LA (Renewable Energy Manag), SCAG, Env. Lobby, etc...

So updates on the job front:
Still haven't heard anything back from UDel (thinking it is a lost case)
Flew out to Boston again last week to interview for two positions with the Boston MPO
- One is a Congs. Management Process Manager (i.e. trying to find ways to reduce traffic congestion in the Boston Metro Area)
- The second was for a transit planner / analyst
Just playing the waiting game, I just want to get things moving forward again
---I used to be content with what ever life handed, but now I feel very frustrated without focus

And I am worried about my flight back, yea Fay (knowing my storm related magnetism it will follow me to the airport in Atlanta)

On another note: are main processing server at work got hacked (started launching denial of service attacks to some networks in France, ?fortunately? the machine was so fast that it was overwhelming the entire local network).... but my machine came out on touched, woohoo!

Unemployment Rate Increases, again [Aug. 1st, 2008|11:51 am]
Hum... I wonder if increases in fuel prices well driving manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.
clipped from www.nytimes.com

Jobless Rate Climbs to 5.7% as 51,000 Jobs Lost in July

The nation’s employers eliminated 51,000 jobs in July, the seventh consecutive contraction in the labor market, as the unemployment rate reached a four-year high, signs that the pressure on business owners and consumers was likely to continue.

The manufacturing industry, which has been hit hard by the downturn, suffered another blow last month when production orders slumped to a seven-year low, according to a separate report on Friday. The manufacturing index of the Institute for Supply Management, a private group, fell to 50 for July from 50.2 in June, after orders and inventories plummeted. A reading of 50 represents stagnant growth.

But economists have pointed to the steady erosion of the labor market as a sign that many Americans are facing significant financial problems, making the recession debate more a matter of semantics.

the story of my life [Jul. 30th, 2008|12:44 pm]
...it is starting to feel like a sick joke
Read more... )

Game plan:
Finish out tech doc
Complete validation of the work that I have done
Try to knock out some of my own research
apply for jobs: Calthorpe (hum yea that would be real interesting), Port of LA, San Diego, AECOM, FEMA, DHS, Forest One NYC, ICFI, anything and everything else
If I have no leads by Aug 21st, I am going to start selling my stuff, boxing up and shipping my books back to J-town, cleaning out the apt., and head back east to J-town on Sat (30th) or Sun (31st)
If something in the area looks promissing I may get a storage unit for a month and couch surf for a week or so
But is nothing turns up around here I am going to take the road trip (and camping as much as possible)

Sedona
Phoneix
El Paso
Austin
New Orleans
Pensacola
Tally
Lake Wales (my Grandmothers place)
and then back to J-town

....if anyone would like me to add a destiation to this list (maybe Tampa/Clearwater or Deland) please speak now

Depending on where I actually get a job and the timing I am planning on heading back to the 'burg

Anyways, back to work

Another Day, Another Dollar [Jul. 28th, 2008|06:28 pm]
Still not finished with this tech doc (it is just getting a tad bit ridiculous actually) I go to work have a barrage of emails/data request/dealing-with-peformance issues/random art projects/interns and by the time I have a chance to even look at this doc it is 6pm

T h i s j o b h a s s u c k e d t h e l i f e o u t o f m e

I am so looking for it to be over {my motivation is gone, and my tolerance for poorly developed and executed ideas is evaporated into the smoggy SoCal air -along with the time remaining on my contract, and the hope that I would be able to work up on own research-
I am still wondering how they plan on continuing the development of the project I am working on with out a GIS person, the work load is that of two people, a GIS Tech to do the data management, collection, and handle questions from students/staff and a GIS developer to do the software development and implementation

In a month I will:
A) be happly employed, or
B) be living back at home in SoFl -major ugh! --I could really use some down time, and the idea of taking two weeks to head back across the country and camp most of the way sounds very pleasing right now

I have applied for over 30 jobs, and I finally had my first (phone) interview today
It was with the West FL regional Council:

Hold
on to your
Hats

Yes, the job is back in Pensacola: land of the lush artistic/music/pro-environment/crazy counter-culture, perfect beaches, bike-kids, no-transit, crazy-try-to-convert-you-now church goers, buck 25 bottles of PBR, a fairly good and low cost of living, and good friends {that I have sadly lost touch with}.

I think the interview went well (I just wish it wasn't my first -takes some time to get good at them-)
*hopefully i will have more soon, a lot of the jobs I applied for have closing dates of Aug. 1st

Well that is it for now, if you have a couch I could spend the night on please let me know: I will be more then willing to repay with gifts of a home-cooked meal, alcohol of anytype, music (either from my personal collection or the cost of travel/admin. to a live show), or just the enjoyment of quality time with me :)

Creating 3D from a laser point cloud [Jul. 22nd, 2008|07:02 pm]
yes, playing with laser beams - or data from laser beams
(I should make raygun that can do 3d scanning, its would be functional as well as fashionable)

So I am waiting for this thing to finish, ugh lidar can be such a pain to deal with

So I am slowly working myself into a depression with this whole job thing, what I do know:
I have sent out a ton of applications, just a matter of waiting it out
There are not a lot of job opening in SoCal which kind of sucks
I have received a letter for Univ. of Delaware showing some interest (to early to really tell)
I think I could walk into a job at the Port of Los Angeles, which makes me kind of sad (they should be pushing for good people and not so ho-hum about it)
I really do not want to stay with my current employer, they are good bright people but the research area lacks a solid vision/direction and it lacks a collaborative nature (and I am sick of having to push for everything to get done) -not to mention all of the development staff is going to disappear after Aug.-

I have applied for jobs in: LA, Santa Barbra, S.F., NYC, DC, Boston, Tally, P.Cola, WPB, and Richmond - and I have yet to get a call back
It would be cool to stay in LA (I am starting to feel comfortable here) and lots of ops. for cool publication work
S.F. would be nice, I have friends that are or are moving there
NYC would rock (I love that city) and I know peoples
Boston would be cool (one step closer to MIT)
Tally / P.Cola / Richmond = friends, and low cost of living

I just want a solid interview and job offer from someone - this is getting a tad bit ridiculous-

Note to self: you applied to a lot of government jobs, and they are terribly slow at getting back to people

On a better note: Tokyo Police Club on Thursday (for free), LA critical mass on Friday, and a sweet arc. ride on Sunday
....I just need to finish this damn tech doc (I am not coming into the office tomorrow!!!!)
